Toronto B'Lunch Gives NYC A Run For Its $
I just got back from the infamous 6 and when I tell you the food here is a on a wave, I mean it. Let us not waste time... here's the scoop.
1. Mildred's Temple Kitchen
"You know why I'm here"... Mrs. Biederhof’s Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes of course! Mildred boasts to have the best blueberry pancakes in all of Toronto since 1980. I came here to be the judge of that.
Mildred's interior is modern and open but it has a very familiar, homey feeling. You walk in to an open floor plan with high ceilings and a large, linear kitchen. It has an industrial yet very welcoming feng shui.
Breakfast and lunch (which they aptly named B'Lunch) appeared to be their specialty, which runs from 11a-3p Monday through Friday. The pancakes were good but un poquito too thick for my blood. I needed some butter to absorb into the cakes. It only came with whipped cream and maple syrup. The wild blueberry compote was perfectly sweet and tart. The mixed green salad was surprisingly delicious. I wanted more of that! The vinegarette that it was dressed in was the star. Mixed that with some eggs and that delicious rosemary bacon... Perfect meal.
Candice also ordered a coffee with Bailey's which she said was fantastic. I would definitely come back here for B'lunch. Next time, I'm going for the Chicken Avocado Club (Grilled chicken breast sandwiched between two slices of toasted sourdough, slathered with bacon jam, avocado smash & garlic aioli, layered with fresh tomato & lettuce, your choice of mixed greens or frites - HOW BOMB DOES THAT SOUND THO?!).
I love a good theme. This little big restaurant was all that it claimed to be with delicious food to match. It's a super cute, open air spot with a patio and hopscotch squares drawn into the ground that head to and from the bathroom. It's nestled in the Liberty Village area of Toronto. They've got a chalkboard out front that displays some specials which include 'dad jokes' and 'bad puns' but they're most popular dish is the Super Cheesy Bacon French Toast... (say what, say huh?) I had to try it. Most of the menu item categories read like a school schedule (appetizers and small bites are under "First Period", some heavier, staple dishes are listed under "Principal's Office" and sides are under "Extra Credit". How cute is that?!)
That Super Cheesy Bacon French Toast was B-O-M-B. A perfect mix of savory and sweet. Thick, soft brioche bread with a trail of cinnamon sugar and bacon throughout, smothered in melty cheddar and jack cheeses then topped with a piece of maple bacon to garnish (read: scarf down before you cut into the french toast). They provide you with Canada's signature maple syrup to finish it off too. So delicious. With all of those heavy carbs, the dish is accompanied by a small mixed green salad topped with a tomato chutney and pepper. The balance of flavors couldn't have been better. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish but I didn't indulge in all of the cheese because: constipation (let's keep it real).
Candice ordered the The Safe Bet which was a simple breakfast of sugar cured bacon, scrambled eggs with creme fraiche and a hot Belgian waffle with brown sugar butter and maple syrup which she enjoyed as well. In addition to the food, I ordered this refreshing passionfruit lemonade that I could've made into a mimosa or spiked with vodka but passed. It was just tart and sweet enough and came in this cute little science class flask or whatever. Then they bring you the bill in a report card type envelope. Is it just me or is this concept super nostalgic and dope?
There we're so many things I wanted to try so I must return for the Krispy Krunchy French Toast (rolled in rice krispies w/ strawberry maple drizzle, sugar dust and brown sugar butter), Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Waffles (w/ hot honey sauce and brown sugar butter) Foreign Exchange Student (golden fries layered with cured bacon & cheese, topped with jalapeno sour cream, tomato & chives), Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese (w/shredded Parmesan and Mozzarella on crispy sourdough). They had vegan and vegetarian dishes too. Hit up their Yelp for more pictures so you can salivate your heart out! If you're in TO, you must find your way to School.
