Stevie's Creole Cafe (formerly Stevie's on The Strip)
Growing up, I never used to go to Stevie's on the Strip because my mom was cook. I never recall stepping foot in the place. Just drove by it and sat in the car once when my aunt picked up an order. There was always a line but I just assumed it wasn't good enough since my mom never took me there. LOL that sounds crazy to me now. Anyway gumbo, is one of my mom's many specialties and I never had any gumbo that touched hers next to my sister and my Auntie (all in the family). Tender, flavorful chicken, plump shrimp, savory sausage, long crab legs and a roux so rich and creamy you can swim in it's thick deliciousness (you get what I mean) - all served over fluffy steamed rice. YUM-MEE.
But now it's 2017, Stevie's on the Strip is now on Pico and renamed Stevie's Creole Cafe and I don't have the luxury of eating my mom's cooking frequently anymore. It was time to take a chance and live life golden, right? This place was voted “best gumbo this side of new orleans” by The LA Times' I needed to see what the hype was about.
In my 32 years, I had never tasted better gumbo than that that came from my family but HONEY... when I tell you I got my whole life SNATCHED UP at Stevie's for lunch - I felt like my world opened up! This gumbo is perfect! Where has then been all my life (clearly it was on Crenshaw and Jefferson but you get where I'm going)?? All those times that I came to LA and longed for gumbo, you mean to tell me I could've had all of this fantastic flavor on my taste buds this whole time? I'm tight.
Now, this spot joins my list of "must go-tos" when I hit LAX which includes Roscoe's, In-n-Out, Jack in the Box and the taco truck (ask me how many of these I went to on this trip... 0. Ha! So I guess it's the must-haves for every other trip home.)
I'm so hype to go back and try all of the other things they've got on the menu. Shrimp & Grits, Chopped Chicken Plate, Red Beans Special, Macaroni & Cheese and the Po' Boys! My mouth is watering. I have got to find some decent gumbo in NYC... or matter of fact, I'm gonna set out to make my own. Mark my words.
If you're in LA you must go here and tell me all about how you got your life, mmmkay?
Have you been to Stevie's Creole Cafe on Pico? What'd you get? Tell me so I can put it on my list for my next trip!
